His mother was a talented pianist and a grand piano was in the house, available for anyone who wanted to use it. He sang with the choir in elementary school and began playing guitar. He then began playing with a rock band and remembers learning a lot from his fellow musicians. The band was writing songs, cutting demos and hoping for a recording contract that never came.
Need a break? Still, the band played five or six shows a month in the Los Angeles area, participated in battle of the bands competitions, and spent some time in a recording studio, all of which provided valuable experience for Emerson. He was accepted to Whittier College, a private liberal arts school in Whittier, California and spent a year there earning general education credits.
He had always had a love for the mountains; his mother would spend a week of her two week vacation from work each year to take her three boys camping in the southern California wilderness — places like Sequoia National Park and Yosemite National Park. Kirby Shaw and George Mattos — then music instructors at the college — were both important mentors for Emerson.
A key mentor for him was Kirby Shaw. From Shaw, Emerson learned to have high expectations for his own work, as Shaw always demanded the best from him. These expectations have made Emerson into an excellent example for young composers. His most important piece of advice is that every song should be something you can be proud of.
High-quality songs that have a message are important, especially for the education process. Finding such songs can be difficult, but that is why Emerson is such a strong supporter of reading sessions like The Joy of Singing. We get to share things with teachers.

Emerson himself attended many workshops designed to hone his craft when he was teaching, and he still does today. In his eyes, nothing compares to singing new music beside your peers. Of course, having the opportunity to meet and perform with a legend of choral music like Roger Emerson seems like reason enough to attend!
