The package, as assembled by Nonesuch, in much the same manner as the John Adams Earbox set and a similar Reich collection, is beautifully chosen, annotated and put together. The discs are carried in slimline jewel cases within a sturdy outer card sleeve, with superb and apt photography illustrations throughout. I am in no doubt that the composer's splendid and powerful performances of his own music demonstrate absolutely Rzewski's integrity and commitment to what he believes in justice, equality, the rights of the downtrodden etc.
It is contemporary but timeless. It doesn't need a "cause" to be enjoyed but equally and admirably lends itself to one. The first disc includes the North American Ballads for ballads read "protest songs"where Pete Seeger is as large a presence as anyone. The concluding Winnsboro' Cotton Mill Blues is much more relentless. Fougues is a set of 25 short pieces that explore contrapuntal devices, and ideas from one piece are often recalled in another.
These pithy pieces average in length about a minute each and yet make for a curiously satisfying whole. In Fantasia, improvised and composed music, and simple diatonic tunes and thorny atonality, alternate — and collide — with one another.

I am, though, wondering whether Nonesuch has done itself — and Rzewski — many favours by releasing this seven-disc set in one go. It is probably not going to be an impulse buy and some pieces are undoubtedly more appealing initially than others. It would be good to think that this release might signal further interest and that his music for larger forces, including his largest-scale work to date — the oratorio The Triumph of Death — might appear before too long.

Variations are at the heart of this oeuvre, comprising about three quarters of Frederic Rzewski's piano music from the period covered. Some of his music is unashamedly tonal, often he makes you think of Ives, and his experiments with his instrument draw upon and extend the innovations of Cage.
You are never sure what will come next. As a pianist, Rzewski is comprehensively equipped, effortlessly virtuosic, favouring clarity with minimal pedal. Best known of Rzewski's works, and most often played, is Winsboro Cotton Mill Bluesthe last of his North American Ballads, graphically representing horrifying and mind-numbing working conditions, which still exist!
The scale and intensity of many of these works, in which political and social issues are never far behind the notes, demonstrate too his stamina, notably in the earliest here collected, the hour-long 36 Variations on Sergio Ortega's The People United Will Never Be Defeated. Rzewski and Ursula Oppens were together at a concert in where they heard the song and afterwards 'walked out into the street singing the melody, and it never left us from that time on'; both pianists have recorded Rzewski's variations, as too has Marc Hamelin.
