Born in Melbourne, Stock became a dancer despite having been struck down with severe case of polio at the age of eight — for nearly two years she lay immobilised on her back in a full-body-length metal cage. Despite predictions she would not walk again, she eventually recovered, beginning with painful stretching exercises, walking on all fours and eventually standing.

She was finally back in class at the age of 14, four years from when she first became ill.

Stock had been ill since Stock was the middle child in a family of three girls born to Roy and Sylvia Stock. When Stock was quite small, the family moved to Perth, Western Australia, when her father, a journalist, took a job there.

When the family moved to Melbourne after a short time in Perth, Stock took up dancing more seriously at the Himing School of Dance where she studied the Cecchetti syllabus. As a teenager she studied with Paul Hammond who prepared her for her major examinations of the Royal Academy of Dance. She moved to London in to take over the Royal Ballet School.

She was married to Gary Norman. At the same time, she was chosen to be the youngest founding member of the newly formed Australian Ballet. She deferred her scholarship to join the company. She decided, however, to return to The Australian Ballet, where she spent 7 years, rising to principal dancer under director Robert Helpmann. When The Australian Ballet embarked on its first European tour inStock was part of the company, and toured on subsequent tours, including one to the United States, during which many dancers sustained injuries.

On that tour, Stock recalled, she did 69 performances in 69 days. She later went on to dance for three years in Canada as principal ballerina with the National Ballet of Canada and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. The pair returned to Australian Ballet and resumed their dancing careers.
